Low Cost Counselling

Key Facts

  • Minimum of six counselling sessions
  • Long term counselling options
  • Client contributions based upon circumstances / ability to contribute

Your First Appointment (Intake)

The initial intake meeting aims to assess whether counselling may help you. This is strictly confidential and your cooperation will be appreciated. Following this first appointment your name will be placed on a waiting list and there may be some delay before we can offer you regular counselling sessions. Your Counsellor will usually be a different person than at this first appointment.

Counselling Options

During the initial meeting we can discuss the options that may be most helpful to you. All counselling is likely to be more helpful to you if you commit to attending regularly.

  • Open-ended counselling
Most clients come for one-to-one counselling, with weekly sessions lasting either 50 or 60 minutes, with the same counsellor each time.
  • Time limited counselling
Another possibility is having 6 or 10 weekly meetings with your counsellor to discuss specific issues.
  • Group work
This may occasionally be available and choosing this option does not exclude clients from others.

The Cost of your Counselling

We are pleased to be able to offer a counselling service which is open to anyone, regardless of his or her ability to contribute towards the cost. This has been part of the centre ethos from the beginning and will continue to be so. However, there are still costs involved in running the Centre. It is because our professional counsellors, who would normally charge £25 to £35 per session, give their time free of charge that we are able to provide this service. Despite the fact that this time is given free, the Centre still has other substantial costs and the money you give is an important part of your commitment to the counselling process, and a reflection of how you value yourself and your counsellor.

We ask you to negotiate the amount of your regular contribution towards our expenses at your intake session. As a guide we suggest:

Intake Session (first appointment) £12 minimum or more (no lower contribution)
Each subsequent counselling session £12 per session minimum if you are unwaged and without other income or
£1.20 per £1,000 per family income e.g.
£18 per session if family income is £15,000
£25 per session if family income is £20,000
£35 per session if family income is £30,000

If you cannot pay £12 we may offer you six sessions and review the situation.

Please bring payment with you. A receipt will be given upon request. The centre accepts cheques but not debit/credit cards.

Cancellations

If you do not give 24 hours notice of being unable to keep an appointment, or you do not keep an appointment, we will expect your normal contribution for that session. If you give at least 24  hours notice we will expect half of your normal contribution.

Confidentiality

We recognise the importance of this. All information which you disclose will normally be confidential within the Centre. There are, however, limits to confidentiality as follows: Counsellors discuss with supervisors their work with clients. Care is taken to ensure that you will not be identified. Under exceptional circumstances your counsellor may break confidentiality if there are grounds for believing that serious harm may occur to you or to any other person/child. Where appropriate your counsellor would discuss this with you beforehand. If you are involved with the courts or the legal system please mention this to your counsellor.

Client Conduct

We ask that you avoid the use of alcohol or non-prescribed mind altering substances before sessions.

The Centre has a no smoking policy throughout the building.
